Liposuction / Fat removal

Liposuction is surgery performed to remove fatty tissue from under the skin in places on the body where fat is difficult to lose through dieting. The number of fat cells in our bodies is naturally constant and it can only be changed surgically. The effect of liposuction is different when compared to exercise and dieting. Fat cells can be slimmed down with dieting and exercise, but they can balloon again later, whereas liposuction physically reduces the number of fat cells. No new cells grow to replace the removed ones. A small metal tube is inserted under your skin through a small cut and its repeated movement will break the globules of fatty tissue. The cells are then removed by vacuum through a metal pipe.

Slimming occurs as a result of removed fat and shrinking of the skin that has become to loose after liposuction. The elasticity of the skin must be relatively good to ensure that it shrinks to the rights size, which means that skin will have to be rather young or you will end up with wrinkles instead of a smooth surface. In a way, this is similar to losing weight through dieting, where older dieters become wrinkly whilst younger ones end up slim and with smooth skin.

Liposuction is an effective means of slimming thighs, hips, stomachs and chins, as the fatty deposits in these areas do not want to disappear through dieting or exercise. It may be necessary to combine liposuction with surgery. For example, a facelift may be necessary to strengthen face muscles after a double chin is removed. A small wound is made near the navel where fat is removed from the stomach, with a small tube inserted for removal of the fat.

It is natural to experience post-surgery swelling in areas from which fat has been removed, but it is not permanent and depends mainly on the extent of the treated area and the volume of fat removed. Tight bandages help to reduce swelling, and they will be kept on for seven to ten days and will not let blood collect under the skin.

About the surgery

This surgery is performed under special or general anaesthetic. We will check the sensitivity of the patient before choosing a method of anaesthesia. The physician-anaesthesiologist in our clinic will determine the most suitable method during your pre-surgery interview. ECG, venous blood and urine test results must be submitted to the anaesthesiologist prior to the general anaesthetic. If necessary, the tests will be organised by our clinic.

Complications

In the event that lymph liquid starts to collect, we will insert a small tube into the opening to drain it.

Skin may need further correction near the scars. There may be difficulties in the formation of scars on the skin.

These problems can occur, but in reality where the fat deposit is not too big, liposuction can be a highly effective and satisfactory procedure that is better and more efficient than fat removal through surgery. In some areas, combining these two methods is really efficient, but even the most skilled surgeon cannot guarantee that there will be no complications.

Pre-surgery advice

  • Avoid aspirin two weeks before the surgery.
  • Take 500 mg of vitamin C every day for 1 month before surgery.
  • We recommend a course of LPG massage 1 month before surgery.
  • We recommend that you use Viadem capsules for 1 month before and after surgery as they improve skin tone and prepare the skin for surgery (they strengthen the immune system).
